Wildflower Bread Company has free wireless and it's right across the street
from my local Starbucks. Now which do you think I give my business?

That’s where the username/password come in. You don’t get one unless you
pay-to-play.

I thought Starbucks charged for access? I know Barnes and Nobles does.

If there's a wifi hotspot available, you can 'connect' to the AP and have
internet access. Some places like Starbucks require authentication
(username/password) while others, such as the Log Cabin Bakery down from
where I work) offer free wireless internet. You would need to get to the
screen that shows the available APs near you, and click 'Connect' to get
an
IP and internet access from it. The whole premise is pretty simple.
