It's from Kazakstan, about as far away from anywhere as you can get.
We almost adopted 2 children from here (long story). The history is
tragic. The USSR conducted so many nuclear tests that the country is
basically a nuclear disaster zone. The population has unbelievably
high cancer rates. Exports of meat is forbidden because of the
radiation levels in the bones of the animals. Children there are
basically under a death sentence from the amount of "poisonous
radiation" released during the tests, many of which were above ground
(I think it was 400 above ground tests in 20 years). Too depressing to
think about. I can probably find the WHO reports and the US Atomic
Energy Commission reports on the radiation problems in Kazakstan if
anyone is really interested.
